One such real conservative is Ron DeSantis, who signed three bills on Tuesday, June 23rd, 2021.
One of those bills includes a new civics curriculum for K-12 students. The proposed curriculum will include the use of “portraits in patriotism” to tell stories of Americans who have been civic-minded, and will include “first-person accounts of victims of other nations’ governing philosophies who can compare those philosophies with those of the United States.” Unlike most high-school history courses, the totalitarian regimes discussed will include communist regimes, rather than just fascist regimes.
The bills would also create a civics literacy exam that all students at a public university in Florida must pass to graduate.
Finally, to stimulate intellectual diversity in Florida schools, one of the bills would direct public universities in the state to conduct annual surveys to determine if students and faculty “feel free to express [their] beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom, ”assess to what degree “competing ideas and perspectives are presented,” and prohibit those schools from banning access to materials students “may find uncomfortable, unwelcome, disagreeable, or offensive.” According to Newsmax, “bill sponsor Sen. Ray Rodrigues suggested that schools can face budget cuts if it is determined they are “indoctrinating” students.”
DeSantis, while signing the proposals, noted that it is nonsensical to teach students Marxist propaganda, noting:
“Why would somebody flee across shark-infested waters, say leaving from Cuba, to come to southern Florida? Why would somebody leave a place like Vietnam? Why would people leave these countries and risk their life to be able to come here? It’s important that students understand that.”
He also attacked leftist universities, saying:
“It used to be thought that a university campus was a place where you’d be exposed to a lot of different ideas. Unfortunately, now the norm is, these are more intellectually repressive environments. You have orthodoxies that are promoted, and other viewpoints are shunned or even suppressed.”
Hopefully, these bills will kick CRT and Marxism out of Florida’s schools and replace those horrid ideologies with a patriotic education. If the bills work, the should be a model for every red state.
