If the Jada and Will Smith ‘Open Marriage’ Seems Problematic to You, Good… Because It Is

One would have to be living under a rock not to have heard about Will Smith’s slap on Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars after he insulted his wife, Jada. Many a pundit has analyzed this in excruciating detail already. The Oscars have recently banned Smith from the Oscars for ten years.

But the famous “slap” has not been the only controversy in Will Smith’s life. Rumors have been swirling for years about the Smith’s marriage. Infidelity and the Smith’s marriage status have been in question.

Will Smith insists “there’s never been infidelity” in marriage with Jada Pinkett Smith. Despite Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s “entanglement” scandal with King Richard, the star is adamant he and his wife have never actually cheated on each other.

While speaking with Gayle King on CBS Sunday Morning, Smith shut down the rumors surrounding his 24-year marriage to Pinkett-Smith following the media spectacle she ignited in 2020. Will Smith stated:

“There’s never been infidelity in our marriage,” Will Smith declared. “Jada and I talk about everything, and we have never surprised one another with anything ever.”

See Will Smith’s comments in the video below.

However, when Will and Jada became a trending topic in June 2020, singer August Alsina admitted to having an intimate relationship with Pinkett-Smith three years earlier, US Weekly reports. One month later, the celebrity couple decided to sit down at the Red Table and come clean about the dynamics of their marriage and the separation that occurred ahead of Jada’s “entanglement” with Alsina.

One supposes that the definition of infidelity matters. If one separates and then gets back together and cheats in the meantime – was this infidelity? Or how about just having an “Open Marriage.” Is this just an excuse to cheat in marriage? Besides, who are we to judge other people’s marriages, right?

The Men In Black star’s latest comments on his marriage confirm that Will and Jada are solid as a rock, entanglements and all.

Hollywood celebrities are constantly telling us what we should believe. Indeed, the media seems to think what Hollywood celebrities believe is important – we are constantly bombarded with their virtue signaling narratives. Aside from the rationale of these poor public examples celebrities give us, a few questions often come up.

Who cares? Does it matter what others do – even if they are so public with their poor behavior? Does it affect the greater society?

Concerning the topic of marital infidelity and being a Sunday Thought, you can probably guess what the Biblical text says about marital infidelity or even merely shacking up.

  • Exodus 20:14“You shall not commit adultery.”

  • Hebrews 13:4: “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”

But, ok, it is 2022. We are often told by today’s society not to be prudes and judgemental. Marriage morality has moved far over the decades from a time when even divorce was illegal in our society. But, getting back to this question of sexual indiscretions affecting the greater society. Many say that it does not matter what people do in their bedrooms – just don’ tell me about it or throw it in my face. But is this really true?

If it is just a few having marital indiscretions, it probably wouldn’t matter. But, trickles of water turn into streams, then into rivers, and then becomes an ocean. Does an ocean of marital indiscretions become a problem for the greater society? No doubt that marital indiscretions often end in divorce and subsequent single-parent homes – not to even consider other issues that may arise.

Connecting the dots, could this be the reason we see society seemingly collapse with the rise in youth crime, poor education, and youth that seem ever-increasingly lost, just to name a few? Today’s media seems to be ever-increasingly filled with insane crimes that were never even thought of a few years before. See the trend below in single-parent households.

Single Parent Homes Historical

It is true that our society seems to “oogle and oggle” over celebrities. If Will and Jada Smith can have relationships such as open marriage – why can’t I too? Marital indiscretions of many may, in fact, matter. Consider the following Biblical text that suggests this moral decay phenomenon.

  • Deuteronomy 4:40: “Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land …” This implies generational moral living has long term benefits (Proverbs 9:11 and other texts say basically the same thing).
  • 1 Corinthians 15:33“Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” This is an indication that poor behavior results in others doing the same.
  • Matthew 7:17: “Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” The result of moral decay.
  • Luke 17:2-3“It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves. If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.” This is another text that suggests not having behavior that causes others to follow suit – even going to the point of calling out those who do.

It may be true that what you do in your bedroom, if it is poor behavior and is done on a large enough scale, can affect the broader society. Some may disagree.

Should we get government involved with policing societal moral questions? After all, Luke 17:2-3 says we should “rebuke” people that do. Should we have morality police? Getting governments involved in policing morality and managing our behaviors in bedrooms would be highly dubious in most cases. Rather, society should manage morality on a more self-governing basis through wise counsel one trusts for moral guidance.

If enough Will and Jada Smiths exist with their open marriage ideologies – especially in an elevated position of visibility in society – could this affect the greater society? Does it matter? Please give us your thoughts on this subject in the comment section below.
