Having pop culture figures defect from one political party or ideology to another isn’t unheard of. We’ve seen other examples, including Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump, and the late Hollywood actor Ron Silver, all of whom were committed liberals before shifting to conservatism. But what we’re seeing in modern America is very different.
In the past year, we’ve seen a noticeable change in the rhetoric from a variety of left and left-of-center public figures. Podcaster and UFC commentator Joe Rogan isn’t just a liberal, he endorsed self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders during the last election cycle. That places him pretty far to the left. Yet Rogan’s been targeted by the left for his stance on COVID vaccines and treatments to the point that in defending himself Rogan is now perceived by many to be a conservative.
Comedian Bill Maher has long been a darling of the left, and with his Ivy League pedigree had been viewed as a thinking man’s leftist comic. But Maher frequently feels compelled to call out the insanity of wokeness and modern leftism, and even appeared on Rogan’s podcast to discuss the phenomenon. Watch his weekly show on Friday nights on HBO, and one might even get a sense that Maher is suddenly a conservative Republican.
Then, of course, we have Elon Musk.
Musk had been adored by the left until relatively recently. As the brains behind Tesla, the immensely successful manufacturer of electric vehicles, Musk had natural gravitas for the climate change gang. Musk also founded PayPal, which made him a mainstay in Silicon Valley and Big Tech, and the left just worships Big Tech.
But Musk is a pragmatist – a brilliant pragmatist – and he understands the need for freedom of speech if a nation is going to thrive. It is that stance, along with his ongoing attempt to take over Twitter and undo their far-left censorship, that has put Musk squarely in the crosshairs of the Democrats and their media. That conflict has now reached a new level with this fascinating recent admission from Musk. Watch:
When Musk states, “I have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats, historically. Like, I’m not sure, I might never have voted for a Republican, just to be clear.” the laughter from the audience responding to the antics of the interviewers mostly drowns out Musk’s next statement, but it’s clear what he said, “Now this election, I will.”

It’s truly a remarkable development, but one that shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Consider this tweet from Musk from only three weeks ago, which was both spot-on and enraging to the left.

Musk’s meme reiterates similar sentiments from both Rogan and Maher as well as so many others. It’s not that Musk and other moderates have moved towards the right, it’s that Democrats have gone bat crap crazy and have sprinted to the far left. Indeed, it’s not that the likes of Musk and those like him have abandoned the Democrats, the Democrats have abandoned them, along with all ties to reality.
