Knucklehead Of The Week: NYC Health Commissioner’s Fix For Monkeypox… Just Change The Name

There’s an approach by Democrats to problem-solving that is becoming increasingly common, and it’s a tactic that focuses on our language. Rather than fixing problems, they instead attempt to either eliminate words from our daily lexicon or simply change the definition of the word. In March in the deep blue state of New Jersey, for instance, we saw the practice in action when state lawmakers eliminated the word “inmate” from their criminal code in favor of “incarcerated person.” We saw another example of it this week when the Biden Administration insisted on trying to redefine the term “recession.”

Don’t fix the problem of skyrocketing crime which results in an excessive number of inmates, merely change the term to something more palatable. And don’t address the root causes plaguing our economy that have put us into a recession, simply change the definition of the word so that it no longer applies. Problem solved, easy peasy. Voilà. This week we saw another example of Democratic Party semantics when a New York City official petitioned the World Health Organization to change the name of Monkeypox.

Winner: New York City Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan asks the WHO to change the name of “Monkeypox” because it’s racist.

First of all, monkeys are awesome. For many of us, when we visited the zoo as children, and even if we go there today, stopping by the monkey display is/was at the top of our agendas. Monkeys are incredibly agile, strong, and entertaining. Sometimes they can be laugh-out-loud funny. Nonetheless, as wild animals or even as pets, monkeys can be dangerous for many reasons, including the spread of disease.

But that’s not the fault of the monkeys in question. If they’re violent or are spreading a disease, it’s because of their God-given traits. And while it’s true that evil racists in our past have used the term “monkey” in blatantly racist verbal attacks, again, that issue was not caused by the monkeys themselves. So, why do our friends on the left have such a problem with monkeys?

Consider this request from Mr. Vasan to the WHO, per The Washington Times:

“’We have a growing concern for the potentially devastating and stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the ‘monkeypox’ virus can have on these already vulnerable communities,’ Dr. Vasan told WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a letter. ‘NYC joins many public health experts and community leaders who have expressed their serious concern about continuing to exclusively use the term ‘monkeypox’ given the stigma it may engender, and the painful and racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color.’”

With all of the things you have to worry about with health issues in New York City, Mr. Vasan, is this one that truly deserves your attention?

The real problem with Monkeypox for those on the left is that it is the most un-woke virus we’ve seen in recent memory. Aside from the name which leftists obviously don’t like, there’s also the fact that the virus is currently being spread almost exclusively by men having sex with other men.

Monkeypox is certainly a sickness to avoid. It is reportedly very painful and is certainly unattractive to look at. But the fatality rate of the disease is relatively low, and its transmissibility is only a fraction of other viruses, including COVID. And considering that 99% of all cases can be traced back to gay sex, avoiding infection should be remarkably simple.

But clowns like Ashwin Vasan want to stay away from those facts. They want to avoid “stigmatizing” the gay community and are willing to ignore reality to do so. They’d rather tiptoe around the politically incorrect aspects of Monkeypox and focus on virtue signaling and social justice. For those of you from New York City, look at how your tax dollars are being used. And for Mr. Vasan, please refocus your efforts on actual public health issues and leave the monkeys out of it. Please.

Honorable Mention #1: In the middle of a brutal week, Politico proclaims “Joe Biden is back in the game.”

There are a lot of words one could use to describe the type of week President Biden had, but “good’ or any of its synonyms aren’t anywhere near the list. On Wednesday, a new CNN poll showed that 75% of Democrats, members of his own party, don’t want him to run for office in 2024. On Thursday, we became aware that our economy is in a recession despite the White House’s best efforts to redefine the term. And yesterday, it became clear that our inflation predicament is only getting worse, as new data was released. Nonetheless, Politico has their narrative to stick to:

Doesn’t the president look vibrant, in that picture? Alert. Sentient. Ready to take on the world. It doesn’t even look like him, does it? If by “back in the game” Politico means “failing miserably,” then they are absolutely correct. If not, it’s just another example of the mainstream media’s detachment from reality and their refusal to even pretend to be neutral. Politico, like just about every other mainstream media outlet, is little more than a separate branch of the Democratic Party’s Communications Department.

Honorable Mention #2: MSNBC’s Chris Hayes gets a beatdown from New York gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin.

As you may recall, last week Mr. Zeldin was attacked at a rally by a man carrying a weapon. And while Zeldin was ultimately unharmed, the attacker had indeed been a genuine threat yet was inexplicably released from custody without bail. The whole situation was absurd.

The left and their media, however, recognized the “soft-on-crime” picture the incident painted and immediately tried to promote a conspiracy theory that went something like this: The attack was staged by Zeldin and his team to convince voters that Democrats are responsible for increased crime, and the criminal’s release by District Attorney Sandra Dooley occurred because Zeldin called in a favor. Chris Hayes was at the forefront of the accusations and he went off on a series of Twitter rants to push his theory. Then Zeldin responded with this:

Ouch! “Pro-Criminal” indeed, Congressman Zeldin. Bravo, sir!
