BREAKING: Queen Elizabeth II Has Died At The Age Of 96

Breaking reports out of Buckingham Palace are communicating that the longest-reigning monarch in English history has passed away at the age of 96.

Variety writes:

The Queen died at Balmoral, her beloved palace in the Scottish Highlands, which was purchased by her great-great-grandfather Prince Albert for Queen Victoria in 1852. She was surrounded by her children and grand-children.

Prince Charles, her eldest son, succeeds her.

The Queen’s death comes just under 18 months and after that of her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who died on April 9, 2021.

Earlier this year, the Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, which commemorated a record-breaking 70 years on the throne. In a rare personal statement to mark the occasion of her accession, she said: “It is a day that, even after 70 years, I still remember as much for the death of my father, King George VI, as for the start of my reign.”

The news was also broken on Twitter:

Earlier this year, the Queen contracted Covid, which according to all “reliable” sources from the past year should have been a death wish. In reporting the Queen’s death, notice that remarkably absent from the story is that no mention of Covid was made. I feel prescient in my earlier reporting:

It will be interesting to see how the media reports on the Queen’s recovery process. It’s hard to see where they take it from here. If she does recover, a frail 95-year-old surviving doesn’t play well. At the same time, a triple jabbed individual succumbing doesn’t sound too great either, especially after they boasted of a predicted swift recovery on account of mRNA genetic therapies.

My guess is that the Queen will do just fine and we won’t hear of this anymore.

Covid faciscm aside, the royal family is in for some major change. How long will her son and successor, Prince Charles, remain on the throne? What comes down the line? In the larger scheme, how much longer will monarchies survive? The beyond-wealthy and land-owning royals no longer perform much function in modern society, and aside from the tradition, polls suggest Brits are ready to move on.

This is a developing story.
